Half a day or a full one, between safaris or before a flight — day trips into the parks, up the Chagga slopes and out to the Rift lakes.
Why bother
Ask our guests a year later what stayed with them and a surprising number describe roasting coffee in a Chagga garden at Materuni, or the morning they followed Hadzabe hunters into the acacia scrub above Lake Eyasi, or a swim at Chemka. These are not filler days. Build one or two into any trip.

14 hoursLeave Arusha at 05:30, descend into the caldera by 08:00 and spend six hours on the floor. Black rhino, tusker elephants, hippo pools and the Lerai fever-tree forest. The single best wildlife day you can do without sleeping in a park.

How we handle cultural visits
Cultural tourism can be done well or appallingly, and in northern Tanzania you will see both within the same week. Roadside bomas that exist purely for photographs. Villages where the fee never reaches the family. Hadzabe camps performing a hunt six times a day for coaches.
We work only with communities who approached us, who set their own fee, and who are paid directly and in full on the day. Our guides brief you honestly beforehand and we ask three things of you:
Practicalities
We collect you from any hotel in Arusha, Moshi, Usa River or Karatu. Park day trips start between 05:30 and 07:00; cultural and waterfall days are more civilised, usually 08:30.
Private vehicle and guide, all entry and village fees, bottled or filtered water, and lunch on any tour over six hours. Park day trips include the full national park entry fee, which is the bulk of the price.
Twenty-four hours' notice is usually enough, except for the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti balloon, which need several days. Same-day requests are worth asking about — we often have a vehicle free.
